Today’s guest blog is inspired by / related to the infographic about what it would cost today to open Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory.

"No matter what type of business or industry you are in, there will always be obstacles. That’s why it’s important for teachers to educate students about the realities of working in business and the possible challenges they will need to overcome. For instance, if you run a candy factory like Willy Wonka, you’ll have to find the solutions that will keep the whimsy flowing throughout your operations. Although the book and movie never showed them, there had to have been many sleepless nights as Mr. Wonka struggled to find room in his budget for all of the fantastical elements that made up the highlights of his tour.
For instance, one of the most memorable sights inside the facility was the chocolate river. By today’s standards, such an extravagance wouldn’t come cheap. At the current market price of the confection, it would cost approximately $32.7 million to pump 150,000 gallons of the sticky sweet stuff through the production floor. It’s enough to make any mogul pause to consider whether or not it’s worth the overhead. It should also go without saying that a flying glass elevator is not exactly a cost-effective means of transportation. Even with the most affordable rocket commercially available, it would cost roughly $109 million.
Behind the scenes of all businesses are a myriad of problems that have to be solved before any magic can take place. For more examples of how the most amazing parts of the Wonka facility would come with real price tags, see the accompanying infographic. Educators will appreciate this entertaining cost-computing visual when teaching."
As always, I'd love to hear from you. Especially, I would love to hear if you have any additional cool infographics or “today” math ideas, or if you have other comments about this blog post!
